Baccarat – The Rules

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

According to the rules of Baccarat, each card has a particular value.  The valuation of each card is as under:-

  • A 10, Queen, Jack and King are always counted as Zero.
  • The Aces count as one.
  • The other numbered cards are counted on the face value.

If your card value has two digits, then only the right digit will be considered for calculations.  For instance, if the cards sum up to 18, then only the number eight will be counted.

Rules of playing Baccarat

Two Hands are given, one hand for the Dealer and the other for the player.   Before the deal is made, the player bets on either the player’s hand or the dealer’s hand.  The player has an option to bet on a draw.

If the total value of the card becomes two digits, then only the right digit is considered for calculation.  The hand which has a higher value, somewhere closer to a nine, that person wins.  In rare cases, if the total value of both the banker and the player is equal, then it is a draw.

Baccarat always starts by dealing two of the cards for both the banker and the player.  The first hand with a total value of an eight or a nine is called as “NATURAL”

If either of the hand is natural, then the holder must expose the same and the game will be immediately over.  In other cases, the game continues according to the rules.

  1. 1. Rules for the player’s hand: –

If the player’s hand totals up less than a 5, then the player has to draw a third card.  In other cases where the total value of the card is six or more than six, then the player will not get an additional card.

  1. 2. Rules for the Banker’s hand:-

If the total value of the banker’s card is seven or more than seven,  then the banker has to  stand without taking a third card.  If the total is zero, one or two then he has to take a third card. If the total is among three to six, then it depends on the third card drawn by the player.

  1. 3. Wagers

If the banker wins, then the wager gets double the money and has to give 5% to the house as commission.  If the player wins, the wager too gets double, but there is no need to pay commission.  And in case of a draw then the wager get eight times the value plus his original value.

But, still it is always better to bet on a Banker.

There are no set rules or winning.  But there are some tips that might be helpful to you.

  • It is better if you don’t go for more number of decks.  Try to play in minimum decks.
  • When you visit a casino see the percentage of commission charged on the banker.  Prefer the casino that takes commission of less than 5%.
  • Always wage on the banker as it has a low house edge and the chances of winning are more.
  • Always manage your finances.  Do not go in for gamble more than you can afford.
  • Please don’t analyze scores of the previous cards and make assumptions.  It is going to be useless and you might lose out a lot of money doing such calculations.
  • After following the above tips, you will definitely find Baccarat simple with a fun factor and a strategy to increase the odds of winning.

History of baccarat

There are many versions of baccarat like the European, French and American. All these new versions are picked from a game called as a baccara, which is an Italian game. The work baccara stands for zero.  Baccara originates from an ancient Etruscan myth.  In this strange myth, a virgin blond lady has to toss a die which has nine sides.  After she tosses, her fate will be decided accordingly.  If the result of the toss is eight  or a nine, she is destined to become a priest.  In case the die lands on six or a seven, she will be prohibited to take part in any religious ceremony.  In all the other cases, the virgin lady had no option, but to walk in the sea. Later Baccara developed into a Baccarat and became a European  version.    Even today, the European version is played in casinos over there.  Later even French version called Chemin de fer, was played in French casinos.  In 1950s, Mr. Francis Tommy Renzoni, imported the Baccarat from Havana city to America.  After some changes, the American version started in Nevada casinos.

Rules of American Baccarat

This game is played with three dealers and maximum twelve to fourteen players.  This game is generally played with eight standard decks.  The valuation of face and ten cards is zero, ace is valued as one and all the remaining cards are valued similar to their face value.  There is no meaning to a suit.  The game’s main object is to get anywhere close to  nine points.

All the players begin the game, which includes dealers who place their bets in advance.  The bets are placed either on the  banker, player or a tie.  Originally, the dealer used to bet on the banker.  Interestingly, the dealer can either be among the players, or be a house dealer.  After the bets are placed in advance, the dealer will give two cards to the banker  and to each of the players.

The calculation of each player score is on the basis of the total of two cards deducing the left digits,  For instance, If the two cards have a total of 15, then the net score will be 5 after cutting off 1 from the left side.  The decision to deal third card is not based on the dealers or the players, but on the rules of the game.  If the player gets an eight or nine, he wins the game.  If the dealer gets an eight or a nine, then there’s a tie.If the players score is either 6 or 7, then he can deal with the third one.  If the players score  is less than 5, then he has to take a third card.  In case, the player gets third one and the dealer’s score is either zero, one or two then he has to draw a third one.  If the dealers score is three and the player’s third card is not eight, then he has to draw a third one. If the players value of the third card is anything in between two to seven and the dealers score is four, then he has to  draw a third one.  If the player’s value of the third card is  between four to seven and the dealers score is 5, then he has to draw a third one.  In case of the value of the player’s third card is either six or a seven and the score is a six in a dealers card,  then he has to draw a third one.  In any case if the dealers score is a seven, then he is not in a position to draw third card.

Understanding the Rules of Baccarat

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Keeping aside the ambiance in the atmosphere, with men in black tie and velvety drapes, one of the easiest casino games among all is truly baccarat.  Also, baccarat has a very low house edge and it’s simple and beatable.  So, if you are looking for a winnable casino game, then this is the right choice as you can make the best bets ever.  You can go through the history and rules of the baccarat game.

Baccarat and roulette are the only games that are simple to learn and easy to play.   No playing skill is actually needed.  It’s so simple that player has three options and all the three are dealt in the betting.  There is a European and American edition of Baccarat.  As American version is more popular, I would want to discuss about the same.

American edition of the Baccarat has either a six deck or the eight deck shoe.  Number cards are counted at the face value of it with no relative value of the suits.  All face cards and ten are counted as a zero value and aces are counted as one.    At times, zero is also referred as a ten.  If the cards add up to 10 or more then only the right side of the number is considered as the total value of all the cards.  For instance, if the total of all the cards is 16, then it is counted as 6 for the hand and one is cut off.  Obviously, the highest score is a nine.

Baccarat has a low house advantage and therefore, it attracts a lot of people.    There are some rules in baccarat that are very stringent and cannot be altered by anyone including the players or bankers or by actions of the whole house.  In short, one cannot decide or act in this game.  So, no special skills are required to play the game. Even the player and the banker, has no decision making power and therefore, no special skills are needed.

In advance, one has to guess the possibility of the game.   There are three possibilities only.  One can bet either on the Banker or the player or on a tie.  If the bet is on the player then the advantage of the house is 1.36 %.  In case if your bet is on the banker, then the advantage of the house is 1.17%.  Lastly, if your bet is on a tie then you can actually win 14.4%.

If there is a tie and there is no one who bets on a tie then it is considered as a push.  Push means neither winning nor losing.  In this case, no chip changes hands.  Three actions can be taken in this game.  You can either bet on the banker. Player or on a tie.  With no other choice left, with dealer making every play, one has to consider how much bet one must put on each of the rounds.
